Remembering Kitty O'Neil on her 77th birthday
Kitty O'Neil was an American stuntwoman and speed racer who achieved a number of incredible accomplishments throughout her life. Born in Corpus Christi, Texas in 1946, O'Neil was deaf from a young age due to contracting measles, but she never let her disability hold her back.
After graduating from high school, O'Neil moved to Hollywood
to pursue a career in stunts. She quickly made a name for herself as one of the
top stuntwomen in the industry, working on movies such as "The Blues
Brothers", "Airport 1975", and "Smokey and the Bandit
II". She also appeared in a number of television shows, including
"Wonder Woman", "The Bionic Woman", and "CHiPs".
In addition to her work in Hollywood, O'Neil was also a
highly accomplished racer. She set numerous land speed records throughout the
1970s, becoming the first woman to exceed 500 miles per hour and earning the
nickname "the fastest woman in the world". She also worked as a stunt
driver in movies and TV shows, including "The Man with the Golden
Gun" and "The Blues Brothers".
O'Neil's most famous stunt, however, came in 1976 when she
performed a 127-foot freefall from a helicopter into a pile of airbags for the
movie "The Bionic Woman". The stunt, which was one of the most
dangerous ever attempted at the time, earned O'Neil a place in the Guinness
Book of World Records.
Throughout her life, O'Neil faced numerous challenges and
obstacles due to her deafness, but she never let them stop her from achieving
her goals. She was a true trailblazer in the world of stunts and racing,
breaking barriers and setting records for women in both industries. Her
courage, determination, and skill continue to inspire people around the world
today.
Sadly, O'Neil passed away in 2018 at the age of 72, but her
legacy lives on as a reminder of the incredible things that can be achieved
through hard work and perseverance.
